CVMF Sponsors Wreaths Across America and Commissioners Trophy

Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation Sponsors Wreaths Across America and Atlanta Braves Commissioners Trophy

Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation (CVMF) sponsors Wreaths Across America and Commissioner’s Trophy Exhibit on Monday, March 14. The Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit was part of a nationwide tour to Remember, Honor and Teach by coordinating annual wreath-laying ceremonies for United States veterans at Arlington National Cemetery and more than 2500 other cemeteries across the United States and abroad.

CVMF shares the mission to Honor, Educate and Inspire future generations by building a world-class memorial park in Cobb County that will honor and thank all veterans and their families for their service to our Nation. The Atlanta Braves organization is also very involved in supporting veterans in Cobb County and graciously provided attendees of the event with an opportunity to be photographed with the Commissioner’s Trophy won by the Atlanta Braves in the 2020 World Series.

“Today is about Wreaths Across America because we are partnering with them, because we want people to donate a wreath to be in our national cemetery at the Christmas season. And part of that money for the wreath comes to Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation. And the Braves were nice enough to work with us and let us have the World Series trophy to bring awareness to the Cobb Veterans Memorial,” said CVMF President Donna Rowe.

CVMF Welcomes New Council of Advisors

CVMF Board Member Al Cerqueda, Carrie Roeger, CVMF Board Member Ralph Roeger, CVMF Director of Development Tony Alexander, Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, CVMF Advisor Ed Asbury, CVMF Advisor Mr. Park, CVMF Board Member Bob Morgan, CVMF Board Member Carl 'Skip' Bell, CVMF Board Member Dave Hambrick, Gail Hambrick, CVMF President Donna Rowe

Last Tuesday evening, February 1st, The Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation’s Board of Directors (BOD) held a Greeting Dinner at the Piastra Restaurant on the Marietta Square for the newly selected Council of Advisors. The Council of Advisors were chosen to provide guidance/advise to the current CVMF BOD regarding the designing and building of a proposed Veterans Memorial to be constructed on Fairground Street in Marietta.

The CVMF Officers, Board of Directors and Special Staff consisting of Donna Rowe, Dave Hambrick, Curtis Williams, Al Cerqueda, Bob Morgan, Ralph Roeger, Carl “Skip” Bell, Mark Johnson and Tony Alexander, along with wives Gail Hambrick and Carrie Roeger enjoyed a fine evening of Italian cuisine and drinks with the newly elected Council of Advisors consisting of  former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes, Cobb County Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, former Cobb County Commissioner Bob Weatherford, Cobb Community Foundation President Shari Martin, former Georgia State American Legion Commander Ed Asbury, Mr. Sunny Park and Mr. Kevin Marcy.

It was an excellent evening of comradery and enthusiasm which was integrated with an excellent presentation of the current status of the Veterans Memorial by the CVMF Director of Development Tony Alexander. The intent of the dinner was essentially a “meet and greet” asking the newly acquired Council to assist in networking and community involvement/awareness in the fundraising portion of the building of the iconic and historic memorial, so, it was a wonderful surprise when Mr. Sunny Park, upon his departure near the end of the dinner, made a substantial donation to building the memorial, which of course made the dinner even more joyous and successful.

Also, a special thanks to Margie Medlin and Patricia Hein for coordinating the very enjoyable and successful event.

Four Chaplains Day

Four Chaplains Day Feb. 3, 1943 - Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation

Today we pause to remember Four Chaplains Day in honor of military chaplains George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling, and John P. Washington. On February 3, 1943 these four men found themselves on the SS Dorchester headed to Greenland with over 900 other military servicemen, civil workers, and merchant marines. At 12:55 a.m., the ship was hit by a German submarine torpedo and began to capsize. The water was frigid and panic set in fast. The Four Chaplains not only worked together to help calm the passengers and distribute life jackets, but also gave their life jackets to others when the supply ran out. As the ship went down, the chaplains began to sing hymns in harmony and pray. 203 men of the 902 survived. The Four Chaplains went down with the ship after saving everyone they could. Learn more

Cobb Veterans Memorial will permanently honor the service and sacrifice made by all veterans and their families.

ATLANTA – Wreaths Across America honors military service from the Revolutionary War to conflicts of today. President of Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation (CVMF) and Vietnam Veteran Donna Rowe presented the 2021 ceremonial wreath on Monday, December 13th at the Georgia State Capitol Building.

Wreaths Across America is an annual event organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and held across the country to remember and honor those who dedicated their lives to protect our freedom. These are the men and women from all walks of life who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States.

On Dec. 18 of each year wreaths are placed on the graves of America’s fallen soldiers. The Monday prior to the laying of the wreaths, a wreath hanging ceremony is held at the State Capitol building of each state.

“Today the Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation was proud to join the State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in placing the wreath at the State Capitol for ‘Wreaths Across America,” said Donna Rowe. “To date the Wreaths Across America, since its conception, has placed more than 1.7 Million wreaths on the graves of our Nation’s heroes in more than 2,500 locations across our Country. I commend the DAR and State Regent O.B. McCorkle and DAR Service to Veterans Chairman Nancy Coleman for accepting this Mission to make us all remember and to honor those who have kept us free. On behalf of all the men and women I served with and all those who came before me and after me, who served and died for our beloved Nation and freedom, I sincerely thank the DAR for leading this holiday Project.”

Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation was honored to be a part of the 2021 presentation with the women of the Liberty Hill Chapter DAR in Acworth and holds a shared mission to “Remember our fallen U.S. Veterans, Honor those who serve, and Teach your children the value of freedom.”

Remembering Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor
This day of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was proclaimed by FDR as one that would “live in infamy.” The first wave of the assault of torpedo, bombers, and fighter planes began at 07:55 a.m. The attack killed over two thousand Americans, destroyed 188 aircraft, destroyed battleships Arizona and Oklahoma  and damaged numerous others.

The attack followed over a decade of growing tensions between the U.S. and Japan and led to the Dec. 8, 1941 U.S. declaration of war on Japan that got the United States involved in WWII. (read more…)

This assault on America forever changed not only the lives of so many soldiers and their families nationwide, but also solidified the ongoing relationship of Cobb County, Georgia and the U.S. Armed Forces.

Congress, by Public Law 103-308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
